About Mission Viejo

Mission Viejo was recently recognized as the fourth safest city among 350 communities nationwide. South County’s largest city has also been recognized in the past as one of America’s most successful master-planned communities. Promoting an ‘exceptional quality of life’ for this city’s 100,000-plus residents was one of the foundational promises the town was built upon. Evolving from a simple idea in 1965, the city has become a pioneer of the physical, social, recreational and commercial concepts that are commonplace in today’s new residential communities. It received nationwide recognition in 1986 when it became the first ‘World Class Community’ and in 1992 was awarded as ‘one of the most successful American new towns ever realized.’ This city is one of the few in California that doesn‘t require a business license fee. Due to this business-friendly environment, the city benefits from a robust and well-diversified revenue base. Mission Viejo is home to High Park, a 112-acre mixed-used development; the 40-acre Saddleback Technology Park; and the Crown Corporate Center and the Crown Commerce Center, which offers a combined 1.5 million square feet of office space. The Shops at Mission Viejo are a major shopping destination for South Orange County, containing more than 100 stores. The city is home to 43 parks, the highest per capita park acreage among South Orange County cities. Every home in Mission Viejo is within a mile of a community park. Over 300 acres are designated for green space including Gilleran Park, Alicia Park, the Youth Athletic Park, the Oso Viejo Park, and the 20-acre Olympiad Park. The parks offer a variety of recreational activities including natural areas, picnic and barbecue facilities, sports fields, court games, playground areas, open grassy fields and on-road and off-road trails. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy the Casta del Sol public golf course, the Arroyo Trabuco public golf course or the private Mission Viejo Country Club. There are two tennis centers, four recreational centers and a Skateboard Facility that offers 9,000 square feet of concrete ramps and jumps. Older residents can enjoy the numerous educational, cultural and social activities at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center. Lake Mission Viejo is a focal point for community activities, open-air screenings, the summer concert series, the Halloween hunt, the Lake Mission Viejo Regatta and the Holiday Boat parade of lights.
